Careless People
by Sarah Wynn-Williams
The title of Sarah Wynn-Williams’s memoir comes from a line in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby that goes:
“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy – they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they made.” And this certainly seems to sum up the Facebook leaders who lived by the mantra “move fast and break things”. As a young diplomat from New Zealand, Sarah Wynn-Williams was desperate to work at the fledgling company that looked like it could change the world for the better. But once she started working there, rising quickly to top management, she was privy to some wild and crazy things – things which actually shaped world events.
This is one of those truly unputdownable, “no-way” kind of memoirs told with quite a lot of dark humour by someone who has had her fair share of hair-raising experiences – surviving a shark attack as a 14-year-old and nearly dying giving birth to her daughter to name just two! If you’re interested in what really goes on among the world elite and those in power, read this book! As the blurb says: “As all our lives are upended by technology and those who control it, Careless People will change how you see the world today.”
