Confessions
by Catherine Airey
Penguin Viking
Catherine Airey’s debut novel Confessions is a beautifully written, multi-generational exploration of love, loss, and the impact of secrets. The novel follows 16-year-old Cora Brady, whose life is irrevocably changed when her father dies in the 9/11 attacks. Orphaned and alone, Cora receives a letter from an unexpected source – an aunt she didn’t even know existed, her mother’s estranged sister, living in the small Irish town of Burtonport. This revelation sparks the beginning of a journey that will unravel the lives of three generations of women, each burdened by their own hidden truths, each shaped by the lives of the women before them.
One of the quirky elements of Confessions is an old-fashioned/early 1980’s video game embedded within the story which focuses on the house that Cora lives in. It’s a rather cool, interactive element that mirrors the novel’s exploration of memory, history, and the spaces we inhabit, both physically and emotionally. Evocative and poignant, Confessions stayed with me long after the final page.
