This is one of the most beautiful cookbooks I’ve seen in a long time and its been put together by a group of Free State farmers with a real passion for cooking and a flair for entertaining!  All proceeds from the sale of this book will benefit Metis Primary School, a brand new little school in Ladybrand.  Marisa de Bruyn is the driving force behind the book.  She was an economist in Joburg before moving to the Free State where she and her husband run an award-winning cattle farm.  Marisa’s sensational photos accompany the recipes which are just begging to be tried!

The book is, as the title suggests, broken down into seasons and uses local ingredients that are readily available.  Here’s the write up for Autumn:

Autumn brings golden light, windless clear air and a slower pace of work on the farm. Towering golden poplars punctuate the landscape. Hay bales stand stacked across the land preserving summer’s bounty for the lean months ahead.
Colourful cosmos flowers flutter in the breeze. Wilting sunflowers nod their heads towards the dimming sun.
Easter at home is rewarded with a last flush of roses, ripe figs, pomegranates and late season veggies.
Outdoor dining is wrapped in blankets around the fire. There is an urge to preserve the sweetness of summer before hibernation sets in.
