By Any Other Name
by Jodi Picoult
Michael Joseph
A new book from Jodi Picoult is always a publishing highlight – she surprises us with every book, she does loads of research, she makes us think and she offers us different ways of seeing things. This is her first work of historical fiction – the book is told on two different timelines – and I think this is one of her best yet!
Young playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. But seeing it performed is unlikely, in a theatre world where the playing field isn’t level for women. As Melina wonders if she dares risk failure again, her best friend takes the decision out of her hands and submits the play to a festival under a male pseudonym.
In 1581, young Emilia Bassano is a ward of English aristocrats. Thanks to her lessons in languages, history, and writing, she has a sharp wit and a gift for storytelling, but because she is a women, she isn’t allowed a voice of her own. Forced to become a mistress to the Lord Chamberlain, who oversees all theatre productions in England, Emilia sees firsthand how the words of playwrights can move an audience. She begins to form a plan to secretly bring a play of her own to the stage—by paying an actor named William Shakespeare to front her work…
By Any Other Name is such a fabulous read! It’s a brilliant look at how even four hundred years on, women hide behind other names to make their voices heard. It will certainly open up some very interesting discussions on who really wrote Shakespeare’s famous works.
