It’s based on the true story of an 18th century midwife by the name of Martha Ballard who could not only read and write – not common for women at that time – but also kept a diary of her day-to-day life which the author has fictionalised in this fabulous read.
The story begins with the discovery of a man’s body frozen in the river. Theres an investigation, a court case, a rape, lots of babies needing to be helped into the world and all taking place over the course of a bitter, bitter winter.
It’s the story of a strong, principled character seeking justice for women who were historically overlooked. It’s the story of a mother looking after her family. It’s the story of the extraordinary work midwives do. It’s the story of a woman ahead of her time. And it’s a love story…
