The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny
by Kiran Desai
Published by Hamish Hamilton
My review on instagram
The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny is an absolute JOY of a read: the words on the page, the author’s observations and sentiments, the quirky, infuriating, lovable characters and the extraordinary sense of place. It’s been shortlisted for the Booker Award – Kiran Desai has won it before – and it definitely gets my vote. It’s a tome – I’m not gonna lie – but the 670 pages are SO immersive and SO worth your time.
This is the story of two young people, Sonia and Sunny, who have moved to America to seek their fortunes. Both are escaping complicated and maddening home lives in India, both are writers – one an aspiring novelist and the other a struggling journalist – and neither of them is finding life in New York that easy. To complicate matters, their grandparents once tried to matchmake them and this embarrassment is hampering their burgeoning relationship.
There is SO much to this story. As the blurb says: This is the sweeping tale of two young people navigating the many forces that shape their lives: country, class, race, history, and the complicated bonds that link one generation to the next. A love story, a family saga and a rich novel of ideas. I can’t recommend it highly enough! I think I’ve found my Book of the Year…
